The social unconscious is the co-constructed, shared unconscious of members of a certain social system—commnity, society, nation, or culture. It refers to the existence of social, cultural, and communicational “arrangements” of which people are “unaware.”  The social unconscious simply meants that people are unconsciously affected by the society in which they grew up and by the historical events in that society’s past.  It is manifested in that tripartite matrix: the personal, the dynamic (small group) and the foundation  matricies (large group).  This workshop will examine in-person and online manifestations of these, their clinical contributions to pathology and wellness, and related interventions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze the hidden influence of society of individual and group behavior

  2. Compare the impact of the social unconscious in different social/cultural arrangements

  3. Explain how historical traumas play the role in trans-generational transmission in countries, subcultures, and individual lives

  4. Apply the idea of the social unconscious to group therapies
